Goldman Sachs Robot Report Machines Wont Steal Your Job
Goldman Sachs Robot Report Machines Won't Steal Your Job The increasing use of robotics and automation in America tends to worry people, but a new study by Goldman Sachs says this concern is overblown: Technological advances will make some jobs obsolete, but will also open up avenues for new jobs, and maybe even entire new industries, where people can find work. But the key is getting both policymakers and corporate America on board with helping workers to manage the shift. âWe have to find ways of bringing corporations and the government into that risk sharing,â study co-author Steve Strongin told Bloomberg. Goldmanâs report lists several steps to giving workers in old-economy jobs an on-ramp to continued career advancement and earnings potential, including improving education and encouraging companies to invest in more worker training, support for entrepreneurs and freelancers, and making it easier for people to get jobs in up-and-coming professions. Read More: 4 Jobs That Robots Will Never Steal From Us Automatating a factory process, for instance, might remove a job, but it frees up the worker to learn the skills to prosper in a new job, and Goldman Sachs points out that the types of jobs being developed today require a more dynamic skill set, which means workers that make the transition will be better adapted to the next change in the labor market to come down the pike.

How To Not Be A Networking Nuisance - Work It Daily
How To Not Be A Networking Nuisance - Work It Daily I was speaking to a group of job seekers recently about the ânew rulesâ of networking and the following question came up: âIâve connected with a lot of people and theyâve all been very helpful in giving me advice and answering my questions. Some even agreed to meet with me for informational interviews. But now, I just donât know what to do next. I canât ask them for more help, and I donât know how to keep the networking going. What can I do to keep them engaged without them feeling like Iâm nagging them for help in finding a job?â This is a common problem job seekers experience. Nobody wants to be seen as a networking nuisance. Especially people looking for work, since networking is the number one method for getting a job these days. Whatâs the answer? It lies in the scales of justice. Time To Balance The Scales When someone youâve been networking with has been extremely helpful to you, itâs as if theyâve tipped the scales in your favor. Your goal has to be to bring the scales back to balance. You do so by giving back. This is usually where job seekers say, âBut J.T., I donât have anything to give back.â Youâre wrong. You have the ability to share with them your knowledge and experience. You also have something called âsocial currencyâ at your disposal, and you need to use it. Become A Content Curator As a professional, you have lots of knowledge stored in your head. You also-- I hope-- stay up-to-date on industry news and trends by reading as much as you can. As you find interesting articles, you should be bookmarking them to share with your network. This is called âcurating contentâ and it involves you identifying information online you feel would benefit your network. The power of being a content curator is, by default, you show how smart you are. The fact you knew enough to select the timely information to share with your network shows your knowledge and expertise. Hereâs What You Do Once someone in your network has assisted you, besides sending them a thank-you note, put a reminder in your calendar to send them some content you curated in three weeks. When the day arrives, pull one or two articles you feel theyâd find interesting and send them off in an e-mail that says: Hi, I saw these articles and thought youâd find them of interest. Enjoy! Thatâs it. Just give them some content and nothing else. I guess you could add a quick sentence or two about why you chose each article, but donât go crazy. The point is to keep it brief. This tactic is the leveraging of social currency I referred to earlier. Itâs you providing value in the form of insight sent by e-mail! If they like it, they might reply back, but donât expect a response. Just think of it as a little give you are putting in their inbox. Send it and move on. Then, mark your calendar for six to eight weeks out with their name and when the time comes, do it again. And then, keep doing it every several months or so. The goal is to earn their trust (a.k.a. balance the scales) by showing them how you can add value to the relationship in a respectable fashion. Anyone who is committed to staying in touch with someone as Iâve outlined above proves they are a true professional worth networking with. FYI - Balancing Will Take Time... But Itâs Worth It Granted, the approach above takes time, but all good relationships take time, right? When you invest in the process above, youâll give the people you are networking with the chance to get to know you better. Youâll earn their trust and respect â" and that will lead to them feeling comfortable referring you. Thatâs when the networking really pays off in the form of introductions to others in their network. And that, could lead to your next job! Now you know how to not be a networking nuisance. The Hidden Skills Missing From Your Targeted Resume - Jobscan Blog
The Hidden Skills Missing From Your Targeted Resume - Jobscan BlogPosted on August 22, 2018October 23, 2018 by Jon Shields Using the same resume to spam open jobs is a great way to rack up rejections. A better approach is to craft a targeted resume based on the specific skills requested in the job description.Unfortunately, the targeted resume approach relies on a job description that provides actual guidance through a comprehensive list of skills and requirements. What happens when the job description is vague or incomplete? In these cases, knowing which skills the hiring team wants even before they do will give you a competitive advantage. Its all about finding thehidden skills.Job description writers dont know what theyre talking aboutThe people tasked with writing job listings arent typically experts in the field. Its not their fault HR professionals cant be expected to have encyclopedic knowledge of every new role in the company and how it will interact with existing positions.Th ere are bound to be blind spots even when the HR manager or recruiter gets input from the departmental hiring manager. A hiring manager might understand what everyone on their team does in broad terms but wont necessarily understand the specific skills and knowledge used on a daily basis. This uncertainty and lack of understanding leads to generic, half-baked job postings that are missing key skills, forgetting obvious requirements, and leading job seekers astray. But just because key industry skills didnt make it to the job description doesnt mean they shouldnt be featured on your resume. Jobscan now shows you the top skillsmissing from the job descriptionGeneric job description schablonesWhen there isnt an expert available to write a job description, hiring professionals often rely on internal or public templates. We have a template for different positions that we generally hire, a non-profit recruiter told Jobscan.A job description might also be cobbled together based on other comp anies listings. Alternatively, genericsample job descriptionsare often copy and pasted for real job listings. (Example.) In these cases, the job description wont include skills and requirements specific to the companys needs. What good is a targeted resume based on a job description thats not even targeted to the job?Figuring it out as they go alongWhen a new role is created, its not uncommon for companies to jump into the hiring process and figure it out as they go. They start with a broad job description then refine their specific requirements and preferences once they start seeing resumes and interviewing candidates. For example, a tech startup that wants to delve into data science for the first time might not know the technical requirements beyond a few buzzwords. Once they start interacting with a few candidates, theyll get ideas for additional skills and experience they actually want. Jobscans new feature keeps you a step ahead of the pack Hidden skills showcase your expertiseTh e only way to survive this process as a candidate is to be ahead of the curve and prove that you know what the company needs even before they do.If a recruiter is in over their head sourcing their first Data Scientist hire, which candidate will they be mora attracted to?Candidate 1, who mirrored their generic request for 4 years experience with data science and machine learningCandidate 2, who has those broad keywords in addition to specific data science hard skills like R, Python, SQL, and TableuCandidate 2 appears more knowledgeable and will be more attractive as the recruiter refines their job description because the candidate knew the hidden skills. Jobscan now shows you the skills they didnt even know they neededIts not typically advisable to stuff your resume with a long list of skills that arent mentioned on a job description. But when the job description is lacking, its smart to list additionalrelevant skills. The operative word is relevant. For example, if youre applying for an e-commerce job with a vague description, volunteering that you have experience operating an online store with the popular service Shopify is a good thing to add to your resume. Meanwhile, listing door-to-door schlussverkauf skills takes their attention away from the most important qualifications.Even if a job description is pretty thorough, adding a couple extra relevant skills might give you an edge over the competition.Intelligent hidden skills for your targeted resumeJobscan has addressed the hidden skills problem by adding Predicted Skills to the resume optimization tool.By analyzing millions of resumes and employing advanced machine learning techniques, Jobscan can now scan your job description and suggest skills for your resume that werent included (but probably shouldve been) based on industry and other skills present.Whether the company doesnt understand the job, simply forgot key skills, or used a generic sample template, Predicted Skills will help you read between the lines and craft a stronger targeted resume. Here are a few real examples from the resume match reportPredicted skills example for an admin assistant jobPredicted skills examples for a web content jobPredicted skills examples for a warehouse jobTry it out for yourselfFacebook Commentswpdevar_comment_1 span,wpdevar_comment_1 iframewidth100% important

Sexual harassment in the workplace
Sexual harassment in the workplace Sexual Harassment In The WorkplacePosted October 13, 2011, by Josie ChunSince the high-profile sexual harassment case of Kristy Fraser-Kirk against ex-David Jones CEO Mark McInnes, sexual harassment has been on everyones radar. This is a serious though often hidden issue, and its important that people are aware of what constitutes sexual harassment, and understand their rights and obligations. In 2008, the Australian Human Rights Commission found that 22 per cent of women and five per cent of men aged 18 to 64 had experienced sexual harassment in the workplace in their lifetime, with four per cent of people experiencing it in the brde five years. However, the large majority of harassment cases go unreported only 16 per cent of those who have been sexually harassed in the last five years made a formal complaint or report, compared to 32 per cent in 2003. Why are people so reluctant to report sexual harassment? Forty per cent of cases did notlage t hink it was serious enough, 15 per cent were fearful of negative consequences, 21 per cent had little faith in the complaints process, and 29 per cent chose to absprache with the problem themselves. However, with cases like Fraser-Kirks raising awareness about this issue, people may be more likely to speak out and take action.Workplace relations solicitor Amelia Peters believes that awareness and workplace culture around sexual harassment are generally improving, especially in the last few years and that awareness is sure to increase even further in coming years. What constitutes sexual harassment? There is a general lack of understanding about what sexual harassment is, and many who have experienced it dont even realise it. The legal definition of sexual harassment is actually quite specific under the various pieces of state and federal anti-discrimination legislation there needs to be some kind of unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature in circumstances in which a reasonable person would have anticipated that the person harassed would be offended, humiliated or intimidated, says solicitor Peters. This behaviour can includestaring or leeringunwelcome touching, hugging or kissingsuggestive comments or jokessending sexually explicit emails or text messagesrepeated unwanted requests to go out on datesintrusive questions about a persons private liferequests for sexdisplaying posters, magazines or screen savers of a sexual natureunnecessary familiarity, such as deliberately brushing up against someoneinsults or taunts of a sexual natureaccessing sexually explicit internet sitesinappropriate advances on social networking sitesbehaviour which would also be an offence under the criminal law, such as physical assault, indecent exposure, sexual assault, stalking or obscene communicationsSexual harassment does not have to be repeated or continuous to be against the law it can be a one-off incident. It can be experienced by both men and women, but is much more commonly perpetrated against women, with young women particularly vulnerable to sexual harassment from their older, male managers or co-workers. Sexual harassment does not need to be intentional to be considered harassment. In my experience, most people claim that they are not aware that what theyve done constitutes sexual harassment. However, in most jurisdictions, the intention of the harasser is irrelevant, says Peters. It should be stressed that sexual harassment is not sexual interaction, flirtation, attraction or friendship which is invited, mutual, consensual or reciprocated.Sexual harassment policy in the workplaceAll employers should have established policies and procedures around sexual harassment in place, and they can be held responsible for sexual harassment if they havent taken reasonable steps to prevent it. If sexual harassment occurs, appropriate actions need to be taken. It is against the law for anyone to victimise you for making a complaint. The responsibilities of e mployers when it comes to sexual harassment includehaving a workplace policy on sexual harassmentestablishing a process for dealing with complaintstraining employees to identify and deal with sexual harassmentThe key to sexual harassment prevention is communication employees need to understand that sexual harassment is unacceptable and they need to understand the policies around it. A written policy is not enough education and enforcement are vital. Employers also need to lead by example and foster a culture based on appropriate behaviour that is modeled by management. What you can do if youre a victim of sexual harassmentIf you experience sexual harassment, you can try to resolve the matter internally by following your employers complaints procedure or take it to the Australian Human Rights Commission (or the relevant state or territory anti-discrimination agency). You are not required to attempt to resolve your complaint within the workplace before approaching the Commission or r elevant agency. You may also report criminal acts such as assault directly to the police. Most sexual harassment complaints are resolved at the workplace level without reaching the Courts or tribunals. Most of the complaints that are made to the various anti-discrimination tribunals are resolved in the early stages via conciliation. This is an informal process whereby the parties sit around a table and discuss a mutually acceptable resolution of the complaint, says Peters. Depending on what the complaint is about, conciliation can result inan apologyreinstatement to a jobflexible work arrangementthe provision of goods or services in a non-discriminatory waychanges in an organisations policies or practicespayment of financial compensationIf conciliation does not work or the complaint is terminated, you can choose to take your complaint further to the Federal Court of Australia or Federal Magistrates Court for a decision. Peters offers this general advice when it comes to sexual harassment I would suggest that employees in general read and familiarise themselves with their employers policies on sexual harassment and other inappropriate workplace conduct on a regular basis. Most employers have sexual harassment policies in place and employees can use these as a guide to behaviour their employers consider appropriate and inappropriate in the workplace. The Grinch is the most important movie youll watch this holiday season
The Grinch is the fruchtwein important movie youll watch this holiday seasonThe Grinch is the most important movie youll watch this holiday seasonOne year, I watchedHowThe Grinch Stole Christmas(2003 Jim Carey version) every single day of December until Christmas. Its my favorite Christmas movie of all time, and I get excited every time its on Freeforms 25 Days of Christmas. Im a Grinchophile if you will. This year, as I embarked on my first Grinch watching experience of the season (homemade peppermint mocha in my favorite Christmas mug, plaid PJs, and setting up my Christmas tree), I noticed a lot more than how cute Cindy Lou Who is and how oddly relatable the Grinch is.The Grinchmight be the most culturally relevant Christmas movie of 2018.I know, youre probably thinking Im crazy. What aboutLove Actually? Um,Elf? Of course, I love pretty much every Christmas movie (exceptA Christmas Story 2 not sure what that was). The Grinch, however, tackles so many issues that were dealing with to day, and its pretty easy to miss it.I know Dr. Suess had a deeper intention in creatingThe Grinchaside from entertainment, but there is a lot more to the movie than one might think. Now, all we need is a sequel because I really want to see more of the Grinch and Martha May Whoviers love.Issues of waste and the environmentTheres a very obvious theme of overbuying for Christmas in the film, but the Grinch understands waste above all else. At the beginning of the film, he notes that its crazy what those Whos will throw away. After the Whobilation, the Grinch says that everything the Whos buy their friends and family for Christmas ends up in the landfill he lives in.By the end of the movie, the Whos start to understand that they focused too much on buying gifts for their family and friends rather than spending time with them for Christmas. While this is a small portion of the film, it definitely looks at how much waste we produce, especially in terms of overbuying and focusing on gifts as the main aspect of Christmas.Loneliness during the holidaysAs much as he doesnt want to admit it, the Grinch is very lonely in his lair away from Whoville. He talks to himself, comes down to Whoville to be around the people, and asks Max for his sedative to get rid of those pesky memories the day before Christmas. (Isnt this supposed to be for children?).Not everyone has friends or family to celebrate with during the holiday season, even though this is supposed to be the most magical time of the year. People also might have traumatic or sad memories around this time. This can lead to a lot of loneliness and sadness, and people who dont experience this might not always understand. The Grinchreally showcases this, and its such a good reminder to be there for the people you love during this time.BullyingAugustus Maywho is the WOAT. The way he treats the Grinch both when they were children, as well as in adulthood, is unacceptable, and the film shines a light on what this can do for p eople who experience it. The Grinch was bullied during Christmas, so he has a negative outlook on Christmas as a whole because of it.Not to mention, the mayor humiliates Cindy Lou Who after the Grinch takes the presents. (What a jerk). The film highlights how mean the Whos are to the Grinch and how its affected him throughout his life. Id suggest discussing this aspect of the film with everyone you watch it with, especially childrenRespecting peoples differencesCindy Lou Who, on the other hand, is the GOAT. She takes a chance on the Grinch when everyone else had ostracized him from their society. She is there for him when no one else is. She even invites him to the Whobilation and nominates him as the Holiday Cheermeister Cindy stops focusing on how the Grinch is different from everyone else and starts focusing on how similar he is to the rest of the Whos. She wants everyone to be together at Christmastime, including the Grinch.Cindy is definitely onto something, and I think we coul d all be a little more welcoming to others differences, particularly during the holidays.Finding joy after hardshipThe Whobilation wasnt necessarily a positive experience for the Grinch, and then he goes on to, you know, steal Christmas and all. However, he comes around, his heart grows to its muster size, and he finds happiness in Christmastime. He sees how happy the Whos are, even without presents and trees and feasts, and he joins them in celebration.Yeah, Grinch went off the deep end a little bit, but he comes around. If youre dealing with something, you, too, can come back from it.Are you a Grinchophile? What other Christmas movies do you love? This article first appeared on The EveryGirl.
