Resume Formatting 101 - Objective Statements on a Resume

Resume Formatting 101 - Objective Statements on a ResumeI'm a person who has a lot of experience with objective statements. When I was a young lawyer, I would make a very large, complicated resume using a lot of fancy formatting. While I would always enjoy creating these documents, I really couldn't tell if they were useful for actual hiring purposes. I soon learned that the only way to really find out is to do some basic research on my own resume. It's not a simple matter of standard human error. Yes, there are some errors that are unavoidable. That's true even if you read through hundreds of resumes before you get to mine. However, the overwhelming majority of errors that occur are due to a lack of knowledge. Objective statements are not designed to be easily misunderstood. It's just as easy to see in a resume that you didn't fully understand what the word 'voted' meant as it is to see a candidate who knows the words 'voted'wiped.' You'll quickly recognize this mistake if you know th e basics of objective language. The first word is the object. It's the subject of the sentence and it is a noun, or something that has a specific, identifiable characteristic. It could be a rank, number, action, degree, rating, condition, etc.The second word is the verb. It describes the action of the object. The object might be 'Voted x number of times at this company.' The verb might be 'Voted x number of times during the year.' There are no details about how each individual person voted, but the only criterion is that they did.The third word is the auxiliary, which will complete the complete sentence. The aux will modify either the object or the verb. It can modify the first or the second. It can modify the first by adding an 's' or 's', or the second by adding an 'n'.One word can be confusing for some people. If you find yourself looking at your own resume for the first time and seeing something that you don't understand, it's important to read the word again. If you have a pen h andy, that's the best thing you can do. Use it to go over your entire resume again until you've fully understood it.Don't hesitate to ask questions. Many lawyers make the mistake of thinking they have to hire a professional resume writer. You can find out more about hiring a professional resume writer if you have questions, but you need to be confident in your ability to write your own resume. The most important thing is to be confident in your own skills.
